After months of careful planning, the #ACPMEFamily descended on the Chesford Grange Hotel in Warwickshire, for another memorable ACPME Annual Conference from 4\u20137 June 2023. Here’s a recap of the wonderful event.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Melanie van de Velde of Big Tree Global kicked Conference off with \u2018Lead like a Genius: How to ace sustainability, outgrow
your competitors and transform our world.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>During her talk Melanie touched on key secrets as to how you can LEAD LIKE A GENIUS to\u00a0<\/span>ace sustainability, outgrow the competition and create the best outcomes in helping to fix key global issues. Topics that would tie into the afternoon\u2019s round table discussions on sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the Exhibition opened, delegates had an opportunity to introduce themselves and
to meet industry colleagues with the return of the popular \u2018Getting to know you\u2019 session.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before lunch we heard varied and interesting talks from four of our Platinum sponsors.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First up was Malcolm Smith from Konica Minolta Business Solutions who encouraged us to \u2018See the Potential\u2019. Next came Mike Collins from Antalis who explained \u2018How Antalis can help you\u2019 with their range of green products. Emerson Garcia Velasquez of Canon followed with a different take on sustainability titled \u2018A Canon Product Security Overview\u2019, before Leyla Lewis & Wendy Hogg gave their presentation \u2018Bring your finishing in-house with Duplo\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

After lunch we heard from the rest of our Platinum sponsors.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Phil Gaskin of Xerox started the session with \u2018Take your print centre beyond Web-to-Print\u2019, followed by Joanne Bass of XL Displays who provided a\u00a0 <\/span>whistle-stop video of their production capabilities under the banner \u2018The Customer is Always Right\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

David Blenkinsop of Ricoh stuck closely to our theme with \u2018Building sustainability into the manufacture and delivery of print Solutions\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark Boulter of Fiery Digital Imaging Ltd and Paul Broerse of eProductivity Software brought the showcases to a close with their take on \u2018Delivering Personalised Print\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Round table sustainability\u00a0workshops \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The afternoon saw delegates don their thinking caps. Dr van de Velde introduced her IMPACT Wheel \u00a9 and set groups the task of using it to identify effective sustainability initiatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some of the bright ideas that the groups suggested:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Anonymous recruitment to avoid unconscious bias eg of minority groups.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Buying local.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>\u2018No mow\u2019 areas.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Signage for braille and other accessibility tools.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Training for people from disadvantaged groups in print and employment opportunities.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Extending the life of equipment eg through improved maintenance.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Replacing sweet machines with fruit bars.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Free health & wellbeing sessions & walks.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Recruitment fairs in local communities.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Supporting food banks and community gardens.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Providing support to community to learn skills\u00a0<\/span>eg using technology.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Verifying that companies throughout the supply chain pay the living wage at a minimum.
<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Using AI to recognise and combine orders made by multiple departments to minimise deliveries to campus and related emissions.

<\/span>\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Improving health & wellbeing by embedding HR within teams, instead of a separate function.<\/span><\/p>\n

ACPME hoe-down<\/strong><\/p>\n

Monday evening we donned our Stetsons and cowboy boots. Partners were swung by the hand, galloped down lines and do-si-doed through an energetic couple of hours.\u00a0<\/span>If the ice wasn\u2019t already broken it certainly was now<\/span><\/p>\n

Tuesday started with the ACPME AGM at which several hard-working members of the Board stood down. These included Treasurer Ian Hickman, Chair Stephen McCann and Jon Shears. A new Board was elected and are listed on the inside back cover. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Working together to deliver\u00a0brand awareness!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rob Sullivan, Creative Director, Print & Creative Services, The\u00a0 <\/span>University of Sheffield gave a fabulous talk about the business of branding & creativity. He shared brand insights that inform the creative and print process with examples of how his team have successfully managed creative projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hot on Rob\u2019s heels were Paul Atkins, Design Team Leader, Creative and Print Services,\u00a0<\/span>Loughborough University and\u00a0Ian Bates of Firehaus. Their shared talk \u2018Progress with Purpose\u2019\u00a0 <\/span>told the story of their powerful and effective collaboration when their teams came together to re-brand the university\u2019s Business School.<\/span><\/p>\n

Breakout sessions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following their success at Belton Woods, we split into several groups for Tuesday\u2019s sessions.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CREATIVE BREAKOUT 1<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this session, Adam King, Studio Manager, and Steven Abraham, Graphic Designer, from the University of Leicester talked about saving time using design management software \u2013 sharing the pros and cons of their experiences and future plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

PRINT BREAKOUT 1<\/strong><\/p>\n

How we measure successes and promote internally. Discussions touched on social media, internal marketing, collaboration, business development and stakeholder communication.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CREATIVE INNOVATION\u00a0 <\/span>\u2013 MEMBER PRESENTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Steve Thomas, Lancaster University revisited Flying Drones in the HE Sector. He introduced the topic to those that didn\u2019t attend his SIG on drones and summarised changes to drone flying and technology since the session at Lancaster.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

PRINT INNOVATION \u2013 MEMBER PRESENTATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over in the print arena, first Richard Ashdown & Gethin Herbert, Cardiff Metropolitan University, discussed customising an online project management tool to schedule work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, Marianne Steel & Nicola Peacock from The Printing Charity explained how they provide practical, emotional and financial support for our industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In the last presentation, Ollie Renshaw, Business and Systems Manager, University of Leeds talked about workflow. Ollie explained how his team have automated many processes, highlighting reasons why you need to consider software solutions to drive business efficency.<\/span><\/p>\n

CREATIVE SESSION\u00a0 <\/span>\u2013 adding value to your service<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this informative session, Ted Page of Accessible digital documents introduced creating accessible PDFs from Adobe InDesign \u2013 from brand guidelines to finished, tested documents.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ted scratched the surface of this topic, sharing his passion and providing food for thought.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ACPME Creative\u00a0+ Print Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tuesday evening saw the climax of the ACPME calendar as we celebrated in-house excellence. See below.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Wednesday morning we subdivided again. This time for a hands-on drone flying experience, led by Steve Thomas and a tour of the University of Warwick\u2019s design and print service. Our thanks to Jo-Ann Wragg, Chris Wood and Mark Udall for hosting.<\/span><\/p>\n

The final talk of the Conference was delivered by Jonathan Tame from Two Sides. Jonathan spoke about Improving students\u2019 environmental perceptions of print and paper products, rounding off #ACPMEConf23 where we started with sustainability.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Before delegates said their goodbyes we had the Grand Raffle with prizes kindly donated by our generous sponsors.\u00a0 <\/span>Particular congratulations to Helen Clarke, who\u2019s name was drawn out of the hat \u2013 winning a Canon production scanner, for the team at Loughborough University.<\/span><\/p>\n
